meet team huggg – engineering

barry

Here’s the second instalment in our ‘introduce the team’ series designed to give you a bit of insight into life at huggg HQ. Everyone has been asked the same 5 questions, but all the answers are pretty different. So what is it like working in a tech startup? And what do all these people do? What are their favourite emojis? πŸš€πŸ¦„πŸΎπŸ—Ό

In this installment there’s a chance to meet the people that get their hands really dirty under the hood of huggg 🏎 the amazing minds 🧠 that built the app and make it work. We are staggered by what these guys achieve πŸŒͺ on a weekly basis and hopefully, you are too.

Want a chance to ask some questions? Details on our Instagram Q & A at the bottom πŸ‘‡

What’s your name and where do you come from?

Emily, I was born in London but grew up in Cambridge

What’s your job title here at huggg? πŸ–₯
Senior Developer

Tell us 5 things that your job entails…Β  we want to know more πŸ€”
Like most tech companies, we have a bunch of big servers that do most of the complex stuff, like handling payments and remember who’s huggged who. My job involves:

πŸ–₯️ Keeping those servers online, secure and up-to-date

⌨️ Writing the code that we run, to ensure when you huggg someone, the correct things happen

πŸ•΅οΈβ€β™€οΈ Jumping in and investigating if anything goes wrong (this doesn’t happen often!)

βš™οΈ Writing and maintaining our internal system, so that the boring admin systems are a little bit less boring

πŸ“ˆ Planning and developing methods to ensure that, as we get more and more dedicated hugggers, our systems can keep up with the huggg love

Do you remember the first time you were #huggged? πŸ’›Β
It was actually before I’d properly joined huggg – my partner found the app and sent me an ice cream from Swoon Gelato 🧑 The message was “Emily you are the best 😘.”

If you could send a huggg to anyone, dead or alive, who would it be and what would your message πŸ“± say?
Dennis Ritchie – he created the “C” programming language and was one of the key developers of Unix. The vast majority of modern computing systems are based on those breakthrough technologies. I’d say: “Another late night coding? Have a coffee to keep you going!”

And finally, if you had to use an emoji to describe yourself which one would it be?

πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ (I don’t know what that says about me! πŸ˜›)

What’s your name and where do you come from?

Andres Ramirez, Honduras

πŸ’Œ Focused on iOS iMessage app

πŸ‘€ Check app on the smallest and largest phone constantly

πŸ” Work with coworkers to come up with high-level approaches to solve our weekly features/problems

⏳ Making sure that what I do today makes sense 6 months from now

πŸ“± Send and use the huggg app myself

Do you remember the first time you were #huggged? πŸ’›Β
Hugged by Ashley 7 months before becoming an employee. I answered a design survey. I got a coffee!

If you could send a huggg to anyone, dead or alive, who would it be and what would your message πŸ“± say?
Oh, so corny. My friend/partner/wife. I send her hugggs often β€œJust because …”

And finally, if you had to use an emoji to describe yourself which one would it be?

😈

β˜•οΈ Some of my time is spent chatting over coffees with design / UX bods, who do all the hardest work of figuring out how to present a solution to a real-life user. I then spend time reading how other people have turned similar things into code before

πŸ€” A big chunk is thinking about how to solve a new problem in a way a computer can understand. Like taking drawings/prototypes and ideas and turning them into code

⌨ After that, another big chunk is typing punctuation into a text editor with enough accuracy that that *apps* come out of the end. This is actually a much smaller chunk than the thinking bit

βš™ This is then followed by fiddling with what I typed, to try and find whyΒ it’s not quite right and how to betterify it

✨ Finally, I spend some time trying to simplify and tidy what I’ve done so that other humans can understand it and not just computers!

Do you remember the first time you were #huggged? πŸ’›Β
It was on the way to my first day of work at huggg. I got a coffee at Friska from my new boss!

If you could send a huggg to anyone, dead or alive, who would it be and what would your message πŸ“± say?
To my Wife. It would say “here’s a cake for you.” She likes cake. And I like her.

And finally, if you had to use an emoji to describe yourself which one would it be?

⌨ Typing furiously

β˜• Drinking copious amounts of coffee

πŸ’» Acquiring as many monitors as possible

🀯 Banging a multitude of programming languages and tools together until they get on and behave properly

πŸ₯ Trying really hard not to drum on my desk in the office (this is the main reason I wfh most days)

Do you remember the first time you were #huggged? πŸ’›Β
Very early, when huggg was cuddly and purple. Ashley (my partner and the then-new huggg product lead) sent it to me because she was trying to work out how it all worked! I think the message was “test.” And they say romance is dead!

If you could send a huggg to anyone, dead or alive, who would it be and what would your message πŸ“± say?
Good question! I’d love to send (sadly long-passed) tenor sax player Jimmy Skidmore a huggg to say thanks for the inspiration; I might not be playing today without him.

And finally, if you had to use an emoji to describe yourself which one would it be?

πŸ•΅ Solve problems – solve problems. Whether this is as simple as figuring out how a user should interact with a screen on the application, or more complicated algorithms that calculate whether we should show specific map pins for your location, and lots more

πŸ€“ I’m also pixel perfect. In development, things that appear simple (like lining up the edge of text to the image below it) can sometimes be unexpectedly hard, and I notice when things don’t line up. This is something that many people may not pick up on, but subconsciously it makes the app feel more polished. Because someone has obsessed over this tiny little detail

⌨ Development often involves getting something to a point of working, then completely restructuring what you’ve just written. It may work, but it’s not β€œpretty”, it can be fragile and it may not even make sense in 3 months

🌠 Learning. I’m forever learning. If I’m not learning I don’t really feel like I’m progressing myself, or whatever I’m building, to a higher level. I know how much I don’t know, and that’s both intimidating and inspiring

πŸ‘“ I spend more time than you may think not actually typing anything at all. Spending some time to sit back, or to go for a walk is invaluable. Even if it’s just a couple minutes, it can really help to mull things over in my head and formulate a β€œplan” on how to attack the issue currently at hand. You may have heard of being in the zone, and this is all part of keeping that going

Do you remember the first time you were #huggged? πŸ’›Β
Ashley and it was “Welcome to huggg”

If you could send a huggg to anyone, dead or alive, who would it be and what would your message πŸ“± say?
Neil deGrasse Tyson, he’s a good egg.Β  The message would say, “Just keep on sciencing.”

And finally, if you had to use an emoji to describe yourself which one would it be?

😊
